WHAT IS THANKS TO YOUTH?
Funds raised at SITM’s annual Thanks to Youth luncheon are awarded to local young students in our community. Approximately $12,000 per year is distributed in the form of scholarships, unsung hero awards and small projects at a local elementary school.
This is a great opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of amazing young people! Students receive recognition not only in monetary form but from government officials and community leaders.
Scholarships are awarded to high school seniors who have achieved a 2.5 GPA or greater who plan to attend a university or post-secondary institution or training program. Applications are evaluated based on financial need and are open to either male or female students. Unsung Hero winners are selected based on their community service or other outstanding actions. To qualify, students must be between the ages of 7 to 18, attending school in Washoe County. They receive a shopping spree award. Applications for scholarships and unsung hero awards are distributed to local elementary, middle, and high schools.
HOW IT STARTED
Thanks to Youth recognition began 26 years ago as a way to recognize youth in our community who made unselfish contributions to family and the community. They were honored and presented with certificates at the Soroptimist International of Truckee Meadows luncheon meeting. The program was first presented by the Education Youth Committee Coordinator, Katy Simon, former SITM President.
A few years later, former member Sherri Rice took the program one step further by finding three sponsors who would be willing to donate $1,000 each. The money was used for scholarships for three graduating seniors who were continuing their education in non-traditional fields.
The generosity of our sponsors has allowed us to award over 100 scholarships in the past 26 years.
