Assisting the Families of Thulipokhari, Nepal
A project of Soroptimist International of Truckee Meadows, Sierra Nevada Region, SIA
This program has benefited over 100 families and currently there are outstanding loans for buffaloes, pairs of goats, chickens, and bee hives with training programs. The water buffalo is used as a beast of burden for tilling fields and hauling materials. It can also provide protein-rich milk and fertilizer for the crops. The goats provide milk and food for the family or for sale. The chickens provide eggs and food for the family or for sale. The bee hives provide pollination of crops plus honey for the family or for sale.
Some families have had more than one loan and when that loan is repaid, they can apply for a second loan. Loan repayments are used to provide additional loans for animals. Simple interest collected with the repayments is used to continue Soroptimist’s vision of education for girls in Nepal.
- Over 100 families have benefited from the program
- Currently SITM has made loans for 38 buffaloes, 25 pairs of goats, 4 groups of chickens and 3 pairs of bee hives (with training)
- No loans have defaulted through this program
