Millie Mitchell receives 2024 Ceec Abrahams Award
Each year the Ceec Abrahams Award is presented to a member of SITM who has gone above and beyond the call of duty in her support of the club and its activities. Ceec Abrahams was a founding member of our club and worked tirelessly to promote the spirit of community and volunteerism. The award was instituted in her honor in 1983.
You’ll find Millie Mitchell volunteering in every aspect of the club. Her leadership includes serving as as club president, board member, coordinator of many committees and informal advisor to others. She has a sharp attention to detail, while never losing sight of the “big picture”. She has shared her expertise in non-profit finance by helping the club streamline its financial reports for all to understand. Most recently, Millie has stepped up by taking on the duties of a “Zoom Wrangler” and leading in the preparation for our September High Tea event. Her wry sense of humor, sharp intelligence and sincere caring as a friend are just some of the qualities that make her so special.
Congratulations Millie!
SITM Awards 11 Women’s Scholarships
Scholarships build a bridge to the future – and the value goes way beyond the dollars. Financial assistance helps students remain in school, maybe work fewer hours, have a little more time to study or to read a child a goodnight story, even get a good night’s sleep. Scholarships boost morale, help beef-up a resume, reinforce self-confidence, and give greater powers of resilience. A scholarship says to the world, you are valuable.
Undergraduate Scholarships were awarded to Ashten Gonzalez, Marayma Morales Alvarez, Heather Morton, Dlonra Pasao, Courtney Warner, Coreen Young and Callee Amari. A Graduate Scholarship were awarded to Nancy Garcia Aranda.
This year, for the first time, we have the honor of presenting a new Dreams Moving Forward scholarship created for education students in honor of Dee Ann Roberts, daughter of longtime SITM member JoAnn Roberts. This scholarship was presented to Serena Dimaggio.
Congratulations to all!
SITM Presents Thanks to Youth Awards
Thanks to Youth honors exceptional youth in our community. It is one of SITM’s signature events and is central to our mission of supporting women and children.
This year we honored five scholarship recipients and six Unsung Heroes at our annual Thanks to Youth Awards luncheon. Our Unsung Heros include Adreenna Wilkins, Alexander Green, Ashlyn Lynch, Raegan Reader, Elizabeth Garn and Asher Norvell. Scholarship winners are Colton Salmonson, Emely Perez Aguilar, Berenice Moreno Almarez, Brittney Atkinson and Javier Serrato.
In a departure from previous years our scholarship focus was on high school seniors who will be attending vocational or technical schools. Students were evaluated on community involvement, dedication to future goals and personal challenges they’ve overcome. They each received a $2,000 scholarship
Unsung Heroes were selected from elementary and middle schools with limited resources. Students were nominated by a teacher, counselor, or principal. Recipients were selected based on their citizenship shown by the role they play in their families’ current and past situations, their commitment to improving other’s lives through community service, and/ or their positive participation in their school or faith communities. Our Unsung Heroes received a $200 shopping spree and, new this year, a $500 grant for a special project of their choice at their school.
