Dream It, Be It is a global Soroptimist program that provides career support for girls. According to the United Nations, educating girls tackles the root causes of poverty. A report by the White House points out that academic achievement by 8th grade is one of the largest predictors of college readiness. It goes on to say that the level of academic achievement by 8th grade has a greater impact on college and career readiness than high school achievement.
SITM is partnering with the Washoe County School District to bring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs to “at-risk” elementary school girls in the Truckee Meadows. The inaugural project brings 10 sessions to girls at Hunter Lake Elementary School in the 2017 – 2018 school year. The project works to build self-esteem, promote STEM, and reinforce the schools “growth mind-set” language to empower students. Exposing the girls to the engineering process in STEM gives them the confidence to study and eventually pursue a STEM career regardless of ethnicity or socioeconomics.
