Six Awarded Soroptimist Live Your Dream Award
Live Your Dream is a unique Soroptimist education award for women who provide the primary financial support for their families. On February 2, SITM honored six local women who are pursuing their education despite significant hardship. Caitlin Lehr received our first place Live Your Dream Award and her application was forwarded to Sierra Nevada Region for additional consideration. Additional awards were presented to Joakima Hllard, Yarely Barajas, LaTara Misher, Rebecca Dennis and Kristen Schroeder.
Our guest speaker was Yulisa Mendez, a former recipient of both a Live Your Dream award and SITM’s Dreams Moving Forward scholarship.
In its 50th year, the Live Your Dream Award program of Soroptimist International of the Americas is intended for women who are the primary financial support of themselves and their dependents, have a financial need, and are enrolled or accepted into a vocational/skills training program or an undergraduate degree. Recipients are survivors of domestic violence, trafficking or sexual assault. Nearly all of the women and families we serve have overcome enormous obstacles including poverty, teen pregnancy, and drug or alcohol addiction. Live Your Dream Awards recipients may use the cash award to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare, tuition and transportation. Since 1998 SITM has disbursed $49,646 to 40 women as part of this program. More Info
